The first signs and sounds of spring appear - birds, peepers, rushing rivers and waterfalls, and open water on our lakes – in late March through May.

Weather-wise, spring can be the most unpredictable season in the region. Sometimes we have warm weather March through May, and other times we have cold and snow throughout. No matter the weather, many use this time of year to prepare for summer.

Those with kids in school sports have a choice of softball, baseball, track and field, and tennis as the school year wraps up. Outdoor enthusiasts trade their ice fishing gear for fishing boats, fat tire bikes for trail bikes, and snowshoes for hiking boots. Golf courses are getting ready to open, and with that, golf outing fundraisers and scrambles begin.

Preparing for summer is a main theme for the season, no matter your interests, with many ways to get involved in the community.

Get outside

The Tri-County ORV trail club, Blue Ox Trail Riders, and DTN trail network begin clean-up and monitoring to ensure optimal conditions are met. Check their Facebook pages for the latest trail condition updates.

Touching grass is more than taking your eyes off screens. In the spring, it means yardwork and garden planning are in full swing. There are many greenhouses for green thumbs to get their annuals and perennials.

Walleye and Northern fishing season begins, so head to the Michigan DNR to secure your fishing license and sign up for the weekly fishing report.

Patio season

One of the most universally loved seasons that spring ushers in is Patio season at local restaurants. Whether you are looking to soak up the warmer days with a drink or enjoy a meal alfresco, the food and beverage industry has expanded outdoor options over the past six years.
