About Breitung Township Schools
Breitung Township Schools (BTS) was founded in 1925. It was initially comprised of several local neighborhood schools. In the early 1920s, the construction phase of the schools was described as a ‘splendid cooperation’ within the community.
The current Kingsford High School was completed in 1964, with several changes since, while construction of Woodland Elementary and Kingsford Middle School was completed in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Breitung Township Schools serves more than 2,000 children from Woodland Childcare through high school graduation and offers many curricular, co-curricular, and extracurricular programs.
BTS maintains a comprehensive PK-12 education program. In addition to the traditional curriculum, BTS offers a wide variety of special programs and enrichment opportunities, including six AP classes as well as very strong music, art, physical education and elective programs at all levels.
It's such a positive environment that there's a lot for students and parents alike. I think that is part of a small town, you really do know everybody and there's a lot of support.
BTS staff and leadership understand that a successful school system helps drive a vibrant and growing community. The district has forged several collaborative efforts with Bay College, the Dickinson Area Economic Development, and various local organizations and businesses. With the assistance of local industry, BTS has implemented meetings and tours with drivers of our local economy, such as Grede Foundry, the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Systems Control, and MJ Electric. These sessions bring together Dickinson County’s education and business leadership to forge a partnership that benefits our students and the community as a whole, with the goal of making Dickinson County a great place to live, work, and learn.
Over the past several years, Breitung Township Schools has implemented a STEM education program. This initiative is true to Dickinson County's heritage and supportive of its strong local manufacturing economy. Local businesses have been very supportive of this initiative through participation in the annual Woodland Elementary School STEM Education Night as well as District Robotics competitions held at Kingsford Middle School. Traditional courses also incorporate STEM concepts as well, and there is a strong connection with the Dickinson-Iron Technical Education Center.
Its school mascot is likely the most unusual thing about the district, according to those unfamiliar with the community's history. The “Kingsford Flivver” is a car modeled after the 1923 Model T Ford. It connects the school to the community's history as one of the first factories built by Henry Ford.
The current Flivver Field is home to the football field, track and tennis courts. The outdoor athletic facilities renovation was part of the construction of Kingsford Middle School. In 2025, it underwent a major renovation to replace the 30-year old track and install artificial turf on the field, allowing for more events. The project was made possible by community donations.
Working at Breitung Township Schools
Breitung Township Schools is part of the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District.
Some of the greatest challenges have been exceptional growth opportunities. As the school population continues to grow, BTS has adapted its plan to accommodate it. The community has been very supportive, providing the funding to build and maintain exceptional school facilities through a bond in 2011 and a sinking fund in 2017. Staffing is difficult for all schools; however, BTS has been fortunate to hire exceptional staff members who want to be part of BTS. Breitung Township Schools are competitive in attracting new staff and have adjusted salary schedules to be competitive with other industries and school districts.
At BTS, they want to really get families involved. They want the communication. There's a lot of involvement in the community.
Breitung Township School District residents have been excellent supporters of the schools. There has always been, and continues to be, a great deal of support for the school's facilities, co-curricular programs, and extracurricular activities.
One thing that is somewhat unique to our area and school district is that Breitung Township Schools and Iron Mountain Public Schools cooperate to maintain a robust community schools program. Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools program provides exceptional service to the area by providing multiple youth and adult recreation opportunities, alternative education, GED programming, and adult education.
